How WORD05 Works

WORD05 gives the internet one shared English word at a time. Every slot lasts exactly 300 seconds.

1. A global five-minute slot begins

WORD05 divides time into synchronized five-minute windows. Everyone visiting during the same window receives the same word and the same countdown.

2. WORD05 selects and validates a word

A candidate is selected from the 150,000-word pool. WORD05 checks for usable dictionary information such as a definition, part of speech and, where available, pronunciation and an example.

3. The word is live for five minutes

The current word becomes the entire experience. There is no feed to scroll through and no list competing for attention.

4. The next word is prepared before zero

WORD05 preloads the upcoming slot so the change at 00:00 can happen immediately rather than waiting for a dictionary request after the timer expires.

5. At zero, the moment moves on

The old word is not turned into a permanent public word page. WORD05 moves forward. If you shared a live WORD05 moment and someone opens it after the slot expires, they are told that they missed it and are invited to see the current word.

Does everyone see the same word?

Yes. Unlike a typical random word generator, WORD05 is synchronized globally rather than generating a different word for each visitor.

Can I search old WORD05 words?

No. The lack of a public archive is intentional. WORD05 is about discovering the word of the moment.

How often does the word change?

Exactly every five minutes — 12 times per hour and 288 times per day.
